Today’s Special: Humane food at your fingertips

AUSTRALIANS wanting to make a humane choice when eating out are now just a click away from loads of restaurants and cafes serving cage-free eggs and higher welfare pork and/or chicken thanks to the RSPCA’s online directory Choose Wisely.

The simple, online tool asks users for their location and cuisine choice then lists all the relevant dining options serving humane food in that area.

“We know Australians care about where their food comes from, the fact that 85% of the community agree it’s important that the meat, eggs and dairy products sold in Australia are farmed in a humane way shows it’s no longer a niche issue,” said Hope Bertram, Marketing Manager Humane Food, RSPCA Australia.

“While it’s become easier to purchase and prepare higher welfare food when eating at home, eating out is more challenging. Choose Wisely solves this by instantly connecting consumers with eating spots that are serving higher welfare food, such as cage-free eggs.

“With the vast majority of eggs currently used in the food service industry coming from hens that spend their lives confined to cages, this tool is vital if we’re to see cruel farming practices phased out. The more consumers demand cage-free eggs, in the carton and on the menu, the fewer hens in cages.

“From a business perspective being part of Choose Wisely just makes sense; it’s free to join and means cafes and restaurants can reach thousands of new customers all seeking humane food. And for any business yet to make the switch, now is the perfect time to put humane food on the menu and give your customers what they want.

Choosewisely.org.au makes it easy for us all to do our bit to improve the lives of farm animals produced for food. For anyone who cares about animal welfare, Choose Wisely is the logical choice,” said Ms Bertram.
