THE RSPCA applauds Subway Australia’s announcement to switch to cage-free eggs across its Australian stores in the next 12 to 18 months, it’s the second major quick service restaurant to make such a commitment in just a matter of days.
Hen welfare is a major issue in Australia with 11 million hens currently confined to cages across the country for the purpose of egg production, unable to express natural behaviours such as dust bathing and stretching their wings.
RSPCA Australia CEO Heather Neil said this announcement, which swiftly follows McDonald’s Australia’s cage-free commitment, highlights the importance of this issue to Australian consumers and the quick service industry.
“Subway’s announcement to switch to cage-free eggs across all stores is further proof Australians want to see hens out of cages once and for all,” Ms Neil said.
“With consumer demand for higher welfare products continuing to grow, it is encouraging to see major companies listening to their customers’ concerns regarding animal welfare.
“The RSPCA congratulates Subway on working with its suppliers to source only cage-free eggs, and doing its part to help free hens from cages in Australia.
“The RSPCA looks forward to more major food businesses and companies following this lead, and making the commitment to go cage free in the very near future,” Ms Neil said.
