Simply gather together your friends, family and colleagues, put the kettle on and tuck into some delicious and healthy morning tea treats on May 22.
Since 1993 people all over Australia have gathered in living rooms, community centres, schools and workplaces to celebrate Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea. From humble beginnings the event has grown to be one of Australia’s most popular fundraising events, enjoyed by over a million people each year.
Every year Cancer Council helps thousands of Australians affected by cancer because we believe it’s a journey that no-one should go through alone. This year Cancer Council aims to recruit 36,000 generous morning tea hosts to support Cancer Council’s life-saving work into prevention programs, world class research and support services (like the Cancer Council Helpline 13 11 20) for all people affected by cancer.
Cancer Council ambassador and celebrity chef, Janelle Bloom, knows first- hand the impact cancer has on a family and how supporting Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea can make a real difference.
“Many of us have first-hand knowledge of the turmoil the word ‘cancer’ creates. When my younger sister was diagnosed with aggressive breast cancer it turned our lives upside down. I promised her, when she came through all the treatment and was on the road to recovery, I would do all I could to give back to all the wonderful people who saved her life,” Janelle said.
Cancer Council Australia’s CEO, Prof. Ian Olver encourages all Australians to get involved this May. “We have seen huge advancements in treatment, as well as significant improvements in survival rates since morning teas first began. With the generous support of Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea fundraisers, Cancer Council has contributed over a half a billion dollars to cancer research and we continue to beat cancer every day through our work in prevention, support, research, advocacy and information services.”
Your morning tea can be as simple or extravagant as you like and it’s a fantastic opportunity to take a break and spend time with family, friends and work colleagues. So gather around, raise your cup and together let’s do all we can to beat cancer.
